Breaking the Binary Theatre is a new work development and community building hub wherein transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ (TNB2S+) artists come together to reclaim our artistic license and liberty.

Rest in peace, Zaza (Diana Oh). 💜

“I first encountered Zaza’s work in 2019 at their Public Theater Emerging Writers Group presentation of MY H8 LETTER TO THE GR8 AMERICAN THEATRE: Zaza’s call for evolution satire imagining liberation in a more equitable and just ‘American Theatre’ (with a dance party at the end, of course). It’s a piece, experience, and call-to-action that has continued to stick with me to this day. In the years that followed, I had the pleasure of working with Zaza numerous times; after Zaza performed in Sarah Mantell’s FIGHT CALL as part of the second annual Festival in 2023, they sent me a new work they were writing, directing, and starring in, A RARE BIRD, which was subsequently programmed in our third annual Festival last fall. As recently as last week, we had begun a conversation about their potential next collaboration with BTB. Zaza was a beloved and admired pillar within the BTB community and I am left devastated by their passing. They created a 24-minute Brain Massage for our first Cloud Nine Zine last year, which remains available to view for free on our website; as I grieve, I plan to revisit it often. A fundraiser to support Zaza’s memorial is linked in our bio—if you have the means, please support Zaza’s family in their time of need.” - George Strus, Breaking the Binary Theatre’s Founding Artistic Director

After a successful off-Broadway run in the summer of 2024–which raised over $35,000 for G.L.I.T.S., Destination Tomorrow, and Trans Power in Diversity–Cecilia Gentili’s RED INK is heading to Edinburgh Festival Fringe starring Brooklyn nightlife star Chiquitita!

Baltimore Center Stage and Breaking the Binary Theatre has joined forces with Baltimore Center Stage to launch a groundbreaking national initiative: The Trans History Project.
