new work development

In addition to the annual Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival, which continues to expand the BTB community via an open submission process, BTB Theatre also develops new works from BTB alumni year-round.

BTB’s New Works Program

BTB alumni are invited to submit for BTB’s New Works Program, providing workshop and reading processes to develop additional work with Breaking the Binary Theatre. Said artistic processes are ongoing and materials are evaluated on a rolling basis.

Through our New Works Program, Breaking the Binary Theatre has developed new works by A.A. Brenner (they/them/he), Ashley Lauren Rogers (she/they), Dominique Rider, Gina Femia, Kaela Mei-Shing Garvin (they/she), Liliana Padilla (they/them), Molly Bicks (they/them), Roger Q. 2023 Falco and Steinman BTB Residency Program

As a part of our new 2023 Falco and Steinman Residency Program, BTB Theatre partnered with New Roots, an all-LGBTQIA+ Artist Residency at Walhalla Farm, run by artists Basil Kremeindahl and Jenna Worsham. In May of 2023, BTB artists Azure D. Osborne-Lee (he/they) and Mara Vélez Meléndez spent a week in Upstate New York developing new works.

In June and July 2023, Breaking the Binary Theatre was in-residence at Williamstown Theatre Festival, where we spent eleven-days developing Liliana Padilla’s (they/them) TWITCH, directed by Jack Ferver (they/them).

Breaking the Binary Theatre was also a 2023 Company-in-Residence at New York Stage and Film, having spent a week in Poughkeepsie in July 2023 developing Dominique Rider’s RACIAL BONUS, directed by Garrett Allen (they/them).

BTB’s Commissioning Program

In the spring of 2023, BTB alumni were invited to submit for BTB Theatre’s first ever commissioned work, launching BTB’s Commissioning Program.

On June 21, 2023, it was announced that reid tang (they/them) was the recipient of BTB’s first $10,000 commission. reid will develop a new, original full-length work with Breaking the Binary Theatre throughout the remainder of 2023.

PLEASE NOTE: While Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival will remain an all-TNB2S+ space, in BTB Theatre’s non-Festival year-round artistic work, BTB Theatre will continue prioritizing the hiring of TNB2S+ artists, but also aim to holistically center the core TNB2S+ artist(s) of each process in helping them fully realize their piece’s vision (meaning, cisgender artists may be welcomed to these non-Festival processes on a case by case basis, based on the needs of the TNB2S+ core artist(s) and piece).
